Apple May Be Working on a HomePod With Artificial Intelligence and a Screen

Earlier this week , Apple’s first HomePod officially became “vintage” in the company’s eyes . Now there are rumors about a new HomePod with a screen and Apple Intelligence .

MacRumors reports that it has discovered code on the company’s back end relating to a new device labeled “HomeAccessory17.1”. The post says this ID category is new, but similar to the HomePod “AudioAccessory” ID, meaning there’s already a surprising amount to chew on.

First of all, it’s the name. Since it is not stated that it is intended for audio, and since MacRumors stated that the leaked code indicates that the device will use a variant of tvOS for its software and homeOS for its firmware, it is likely that it will be an entirely new product rather than updated version. smart speaker. Like Google’s Nest Hub , this could be Apple’s take on a smart home hub with a built-in screen.

Secondly, there’s the “17.1” number in the name, which MacRumors says suggests the device will use an A18 chip, allowing it to be powered by Apple Intelligence . Apple Intelligence will arrive later this fall, around the same time Apple typically announces new iPhones. It’s possible that the company will also announce this product in the same window, and also introduce ways to use artificial intelligence to help plan events, take calls, control lights, or otherwise help around the house.

Unfortunately, that’s all we know at the moment. Apple’s last HomePod was the HomePod (2nd generation) , which launched in January 2023 for $299. Like the original HomePod, it focuses heavily on Siri integration, so it would make sense for the new HomePod to introduce an updated Siri that comes with Apple Intelligence.

Beyond the smart home, MacRumors also said it found code that references two unreleased Apple TV models, suggesting updates are in the works for that device as well.
