How I solved today’s Connections

PORT, SOCKET, SOCKET and CONNECTOR are words that refer to places on the wall where electronic devices can be connected. 🟩

DEMAND, MARKET, AUDIENCE, and APPETITE all describe widespread hunger or desire for a particular product. 🟦

CAPTAIN, MAJOR, GENERAL and PRIVATE are all military ranks. 🟨

That leaves WANT, POP-UP, PERSONAL and ATTACK, which are types of advertising. 🟪

How to play in Communications

I have a full guide to playing Connections , but here’s a quick rundown of the rules:

First, find the Connections game either on the New York Times website or in their Games app (formerly the Crossword app). You will see a game board with 16 tiles, each with one word or phrase written on it. Your task is to select a group of four tiles that have something in common. Often they are the same thing (for example: RAIN, HAIL, SNOW and HAIL are all types of wet weather), but sometimes there is a play on words (for example, BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN and WISH are all types of lists : wish list, guest list, etc.).

Select four items and click the Submit button. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will open. (The easiest option is yellow, then green, then blue and purple.) If your guess is wrong, you will have the opportunity to try again.

You will win if you correctly identify all four groups. But if you make four mistakes before you finish, the game ends and the answers are revealed.

How to win Connections

The most important thing to know to win Connections is that factions are designed to be challenging. Expect to see overlapping groups. For example, one puzzle had six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKES, OMELETTE, WAFFLES, and CROPS. But BACON turned out to be part of a group of artists along with CLOSE, MUNCH and WHISTLER, and the EGG was in a group of things of which there were a dozen (along with JUROR, ROSE and MONTH). So don’t hit “send” until you’re sure your group of four only contains these four things.

If you get stuck, another strategy is to look at words that don’t seem to have any connection to others. If all that comes to mind when you see WHISTLER is a painting called Whistler’s Mother, you may be on to something. Once I had that question resolved, I started Googling if there was an artist named Close, because Close didn’t fit into any of the obvious themes either.

Another way to win when you’re stuck is obviously to read some helpful tips, which is why we share these tips every day. Check back tomorrow for the next puzzle!
