Proton Drive Brings Automatic Photo Backup to IOS
When phones also became cameras, many of us started taking photos every day. These photos can be of your pets, food, or even special events such as weddings and birthdays. Or maybe you have more valuable photos of, say, a family member who is no longer with you. A lot of photos means a lot of data management, and to protect your photos, you’ll need to back them up.
But not all cloud storage is created equal, and while Apple’s built-in iCloud systems are great to use, Proton has now updated the iOS version of its impressive cloud storage with automatic photo backup, allowing you to fully protect your most treasured memories. -end-to-end encryption.
This newly released feature , previously only available on Android, comes just weeks after some users reported that their old, deleted photos were returning to their iPhones after updating to a new version of iOS. While Apple has now fixed the issue and offers end-to-end encryption options , it still raises some concerns about how much control Apple users have over their own photos, and options like Proton Drive can give you a great iCloud alternative without having to worry about that you will sacrifice your privacy.
Of course, there are other third-party cloud storage options available in the App Store. Google Photos, which comes pre-installed on Android phones, is probably the best-known and most used competitor to iCloud. However, Proton Drive offers something that Google Photos doesn’t – full end-to-end encryption.
Sure, your photos are protected with Google Photos, but Google still has access to your precious memories because your photos aren’t encrypted until they’re uploaded to Google’s servers. With Proton Drive, no one except you and the people you share your content with has access to these files. That’s because Proton Drive encrypts your photos and their metadata right on your phone before they’re transferred to Proton’s servers. This ensures that only you have access to your data, making it one of the best options for users who want to protect their memory and privacy with utmost care.
Automatic photo backup is a feature I’ve been wanting to see in Proton Drive since I started using it a few months ago, and Proton says it’s also one of the most requested features from the community. The feature was rolled out last week, and you can enable automatic camera downloads in the app by opening the app on your iPhone and accessing the hamburger menu in the top left corner (the icon that looks like three horizontal lines on top of each other). From there, simply tap Settings and then turn on Photo Backup and the app will start automatically backing up your photos every time you take a new one.
Adding photo backup to Proton Drive makes it even easier to sign out of Google entirely, which may be worth considering for privacy-conscious individuals since Google and other online cloud services have access to your personal data while it’s stored on their servers.
