How to Get Shazam to Open Spotify (or Any Other Music Streaming Service)
Apple likes to keep you in its walled garden of convenient but locked apps. This isn’t always a bad thing: I love using the Apple Watch to unlock my Mac . However, it’s annoying when you can’t use third-party apps or services for certain purposes, such as music streaming or voice assistants. Shazam, the Apple-owned song recognition service, is a great example of this.
When you ask Siri to identify a song playing around you, the voice assistant will listen, recognize the song through Shazam , and show you a button to open it in Apple Music. This is great if you use Apple’s streaming service, but not so great if you choose a third-party option. iOS typically doesn’t allow you to open these links in Spotify, YouTube Music, or any other streaming app you might be using. Luckily, the iPhone automation community has a great solution to this particular problem: the Quick Shazam shortcut created by user @ZXXII on RoutineHub .
Make Shazam send songs to Spotify (or other services)
To prevent Shazam from constantly sending you to Apple Music, you need to use the Apple Shortcuts app. Most iPhones already have it, so start by downloading the Quick Shazam shortcut and launch it on your iPhone. During the installation process, Quick Shazam will prompt you to select your favorite music platform from the following options:
-
Spotify
-
Diezer
-
Tidal
-
iTunes
-
YouTube
-
YouTube Music
-
Pandora
-
Soundcloud
Don’t worry if you unsubscribe later, as you can change your choice at any time. Before using this shortcut, I highly recommend making it easier to access by adding it to your home screen. To do this, open the Shortcuts app and hold the Quick Shazam icon. Tap Share and Add to Home Screen . It will now open as an application.
From here, simply tap the shortcut icon whenever you want, and Shazam will automatically open and start listening to the song. Once the song is identified, you’ll see a Shazam window pop up with an Apple Music button for a second or so. Don’t pay any attention to it. The shortcut will automatically close the pop-up window and open the song on your preferred music streaming service.
