The KonMari Method You’re Overlooking When Organizing Your Clothes
You can use any method you want to declutter your home , but they all require you to find a good way to organize the items you decide to keep when you’re done. KonMari, perhaps the most famous method for decluttering and cleaning, even gives tips on how to fold your clothes once you’re done deciding which ones spark your joy—but that advice from Marie Kondo is too often ignored in favor of her structured approach to tidying up. cutting down how much you have . Don’t let Kondo down by following only half of her advice.
What is file folding?
This method is one of Kondo’s original and longest-standing tips, taken directly from the book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up . This is sometimes called “folder stacking.” This involves folding clothes so that they can be stacked vertically in drawers.
The way you fold each garment will be different, and you may want to try several approaches until you figure out how to make each one look like a triangle or rectangle and stand up straight. Here’s how Kondo recommends doing it with some types of clothing:
Once you have everything stacked upright, you can stack them in the drawer from front to back. You’ll know you’re doing it right when you see every item.
Why does file collapsing work?
Folding clothes this way has several benefits. First, storing them vertically and with shorter folds reduces wrinkles, especially since there are no items underneath to be weighed down by items on top.
Secondly, it allows you to see all your clothes and have a better idea of what you have. It’s easy to forget what you already own, buy duplicates, or waste space on things you never wear if you can’t see your items, but this prevents all of that.
Finally, you can store more this way than just stacking everything on top of each other, especially if you make neat little folds. While being able to store more things won’t necessarily help you declutter or reduce the amount of stuff you have, it will at least make your drawers more organized, which will prevent your space from becoming cluttered and overcrowded.
Make things easier by purchasing several flat baskets, like this set of four for $15.99 , to keep each type of clothing separate and maintain structure even when some items are put away.
