QuickRecorder Is the Best Alternative to Screen Recorder for Your Mac
The Mac’s built-in screenshot tool is pretty cool, but recording your screen has always been a challenge. At the time of writing, this feature is split between two apps – the screenshot tool (accessed by pressing Command-Shift-5 ) and good old QuickTime Player. For a better, more direct alternative to macOS’s built-in screen recording tools, try the free QuickRecorder utility.
QuickRecorder combines the best macOS screen recording features with great customization options, making it a must-have. You can record the screen of your Mac or the screen of an iPhone connected to your Mac, or even record audio from any application running on your Mac. This includes your web browser, video conferencing application, or any other application that plays audio.
Why use a screen recording app?
The screen recording app does what it says – it records video of your screen. This is useful for many reasons. If your Mac is having problems, you can use a screen recording app to record a video and demonstrate the problem to Apple or a nearby repair shop. If your grandparents can’t figure out how to do something on their Mac, you can record your screen and send them a video to show them how something is done.
With a good screen recording app, you’ll be able to choose the recording quality to optimize it in terms of space or appearance. A good recording app will also allow you to choose whether to show the mouse cursor, record the app’s audio, and record a voiceover along with the screen recording. QuickRecorder does all these things and it’s free, making it an attractive alternative to macOS screen recording tools.
Installing and configuring QuickRecorder
Since you will need to download this app from GitHub (click the dmg file to download, then double-click the download file to install), your Mac may not allow you to use it immediately. You may have to go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway to launch it. This is a security feature, but QuickRecorder is safe to use, so you don’t have to worry about it. The app may also prompt you to grant it recording permissions, which you can do directly from the pop-up window.
Using QuickRecorder to Record Screen
Once the setup is complete, you can launch QuickRecorder. The app will display a nice large rectangular panel with simple options. You can choose one of the following options:
-
System Audio : Records audio from any app on your Mac.
-
Screen : Record the entire screen.
-
Screen Area : Allows you to create a rectangle on the screen and record only those objects that are inside the rectangle.
-
Application : Allows you to select an application and record all visible windows of that application.
-
Window : Records the selected open window.
-
Mobile Device : If you have connected your mobile device to your Mac using a USB cable, this will allow you to record the screen of your mobile device. Typically, you record your screen directly on your mobile device, but this method saves you the hassle of converting formats and transferring the file to your Mac.
Once you’ve selected any of the above options, QuickRecorder will show you a record button next to several additional resolution, quality, and frame rate options. Click record to start recording. When recording starts, you will see a purple area in the menu bar. Tap the pause icon to take a break from recording or the stop icon to end recording. When you’re done recording, QuickRecorder will save the file to your Mac’s desktop.
QuickRecorder also supports Presenter Overlay, a feature of macOS Sonoma that allows you to place yourself on camera while recording your screen. On older versions of macOS, the app allows you to record yourself along with screen recording using your webcam.
Setting up QuickRecorder for optimal results
The default settings in QuickRecorder are pretty good, but you can easily customize the app for more functionality. Once the app is open, click the gear icon to open Settings . Here you can configure almost everything related to screen recording. The most important parameters are listed below:
-
Video Settings: Select MOV or MP4 video format and select encoder (H.264 for greater compatibility and H.265 for smaller file sizes).
-
Audio Settings: The default audio format is AAC, but you can choose MP3 for smaller files or ALAC/FLAC for lossless audio. You can also turn on noise reduction to block out background noise.
-
Keyboard shortcut settings: Set up keyboard shortcuts to start recording without using a mouse.
-
Other settings: Here you can add a short delay before recording starts to give you time to gather your strength. You can also include or exclude QuickRecorder and the menu bar from recordings. The app can also highlight the mouse cursor if you want to make it more clear where to click.
-
Excluded Applications: Allows you to select which applications not to record.
-
Icon settings: Use these to show or hide an app in the dock or menu bar.
-
Select Save Folder: Select where the screen recordings will be saved.
By adjusting these settings, you can improve the level of screen recording on your Mac.
