Apple Is Finally Making Siri a Real AI Chatbot
Apple currently lags behind in the field of generative artificial intelligence, but that could soon change if recent reports are to be believed. According to inside sources who spoke to The New York Times , Apple is working hard to add generative artificial intelligence to Siri, which could debut as early as the WWDC developer conference in June .
Originally introduced back in 2011, Siri hasn’t changed much over the years. The digital assistant still struggles in many areas, often completely misunderstanding issues, and artificial intelligence offers the opportunity to move forward.
But Apple has a lot of catching up to do to match ChatGPT and Google Gemini . The company appears to be working overtime, with sources saying competitors’ rapid progress in overtaking Siri has led to one of the biggest reorganizations Apple has seen in more than a decade. Now Apple is supposedly deep into its own AI plans and developments.
Of course, all of these insider sources remain anonymous. But if they can be trusted, Apple will soon add its own generative AI to Siri. Apple is even reportedly in talks to license some competing AI models, including Google and OpenAI .
Further “proof” that Apple is fully committed to artificial intelligence is the fairly recent news that the company has canceled work on the Apple Car , freeing the company to pursue other projects. These sources also told The New York Times that Apple plans to promote the improved Siri as a more private way to use generative AI, since it will process everything directly on the iPhone rather than sending it to large data centers for processing.
This will, of course, also save money in the long run, as cloud computing costs for ChatGPT and other models can increase significantly depending on the volume of content generated. However, there is a trade-off: smaller systems are reportedly more likely to hallucinate and return false information—a long-standing problem with generative AI. Whether Siri will face this problem depends entirely on how Apple approaches development.
Either way, it’s an interesting time to be an Apple fan. ChatGPT is already gearing up to take on Google with its own search engine, but we shouldn’t expect Apple to release something that big right away. Apple doesn’t even need to have the best generative AI yet. It just needs to finally find its feet so it can expand over time.
