OpenAI Could Announce Its ChatGPT-Based Search Engine on Monday
The OpenAI search engine could be just around the corner. According to two sources exclusive to Reuters , the company is preparing to announce its AI search plans on Monday, May 13, setting the stage for its big play against other search engines, namely, of course, Google.
We know very little about what OpenAI has planned for its Google killer: Right now, there are rumors that the search engine will use ChatGPT artificial intelligence technology to return results from the Internet, citing its findings. This is very similar to Google’s AI search results powered by Gemini , as well as Bing’s Copilot search, which is also powered by ChatGPT. (Microsoft is a major investor in OpenAI.)
However, these big names aren’t the only ones introducing AI-powered searches. Founded by a former OpenAI employee, Perplexity also offers AI citation search capabilities . Additionally, Perplexity comes with filters to refine your search: you can, for example, choose to only return results from scientific articles or have the bot pull sources exclusively from Reddit. (Many of us already add “Reddit” to the end of our searches anyway.)
While Reuters was the first to report the news, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the company’s search engine plans. Earlier this week, rumors of ” ChatGPT search ” made headlines after the URL “search.chatgpt.com” was discovered. At the time, there were rumors that OpenAI would make a big announcement on May 9th. Thursday passed without any such announcement, but these rumors had little basis. According to unnamed Reuters sources, on Monday we’ll see ChatGPT Search, or whatever the company eventually calls its search engine.
The company declined to comment to Reuters on the agency’s new information, which tells us little. But there’s no denying that chatter about ChatGPT’s search is growing this week. If OpenAI does have a search engine ready for release, it will be interesting to see what impact it will have on the search market. How many of us would abandon Google or any other search engine we prefer if results were returned by ChatGPT?
