If Your Galaxy Notifications Aren’t Working, Here’s the Solution
If notifications on your Galaxy smartphone aren’t working, you’re not alone. As reported by Android Police , Samsung’s latest One UI 6.1 update inadvertently affected notification categories on some users’ Galaxy devices, throwing carefully chosen alert settings out the window. Fortunately, there is a solution.
Notification categories, or notification feeds as Google calls them, are a feature that lets you enable or disable certain types of notifications on an app-by-app basis. For example, you can turn on DM notifications from an app, but turn off all other types of notifications, including promotions, friend requests, breaking news, and so on.
If you have a lot of apps installed on your smartphone that you’ve manually configured notification categories for, you don’t want that work to disappear overnight. Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened to some users with the One UI 6.1 update: in addition to adding new AI features like Search Circle and Live Translation, this new version of One UI adds a new Manage Notification Categories category for everyone Application setting that allows you to turn this feature on or off on your Galaxy. This is fine in theory – more choice is usually a good thing – but Samsung apparently decided to disable this feature by default in the latest update.
So, users found that their notification category settings were removed after the update, meaning that all those types of notifications they didn’t want to see started being delivered. (Hello, friend requests. Goodbye, sanity.)
Luckily, there is an easy solution to this problem: enable this feature instead. One UI 6.1 reportedly remembers notification category settings even if you turn off the feature, so you can always go back to how you set those settings if you turn the feature back on. So, although this option is disabled by default, a simple flick of the switch is all it takes to turn it back on.
How to bring back notification categories in One UI 6.1
To find this option, go to Settings > Notifications > More Settings . Scroll down and you’ll see Manage notification categories per app . Turn it on and the previous notification category settings should be restored.
