You Need to Re-Verify Your Age in the Meta-Quest

Meta wants to make sure you are old enough to use your Meta Quest the way you want. On Tuesday, the company announced in a blog post that all Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3 users will be required to verify their age in their Meta account within 30 days of the request.

The company says it’s doing this to help developers better understand the age of users downloading their apps and to protect younger users from inappropriate content. The company has its own user age group API through which it can communicate the user’s age group to the app developer. In theory, a developer could create different app experiences for different age groups, and when you log in, you get an experience tailored to your age.

When using the meta account, three age groups are taken into account:

  • Adults (18+) : These users can choose whether to make their profile and activities public or private.

  • Teens (13-17 years old) : By default, these accounts are mostly private, including profiles and active statuses. Teens should approve followers rather than allow them by default, and parents can use monitoring tools to monitor the process.

  • Children (10-12 years old) : These accounts are completely managed by parents. Parents must set up an account for their child, and all settings must be kept private. Parents have final say on whether a child can download an app, and whether they can block apps.

How to check your age in Meta Quest

If you haven’t already done so, you will soon receive a prompt to verify your age in Meta Quest. Once you do this, you will have 30 days to log into your meta account and enter your date of birth. For most users this should be a simple process. However, if you enter your birthday incorrectly, Meta says you can change it if you verify your identity with an ID or credit card.

Once your date of birth is confirmed, Meta will show you which account type is appropriate for your age. For example, if the selected account type is Teens, but the user says they are 11 years old, Meta will prompt them to change the account type to Child Teen or ask them to confirm that the user is at least 13 years old.
