Pixel 8 Will Still Get Gemini Nano AI Features
Citing “hardware limitations” as the main reason why Google’s Gemini Nano didn’t come on the cheaper Pixel 8 , the tech giant appears to have found a way to make it work after all.
According to reports from TechCrunch , Google has announced plans to bring on-device AI features such as summary recording and smart replies to the Pixel 8. These features were previously blocked on the Pixel 8 Pro , as Google said it had no plans to do so. bring these nano features to the base Pixel 8 due to hardware differences.
For the most part, Google has relied heavily on cloud-based artificial intelligence capabilities. But now that the company is bringing its features to devices, it will (hopefully) open up a lot of opportunities for faster processing and response times.
It’s interesting to see Google backtracking on its claims that nanotechnology features won’t work on the Pixel 8 . It’s likely that the company hasn’t found a way to make it work with less RAM than the Pixel 8—it only offers 8GB of RAM, compared to the 12GB of RAM in the Pixel 8 Pro . However, after some “testing and verification”, the company is ready to bring it to the Pixel 8 in the latest Android developer build.
This is good news for Pixel 8 owners, as Google will hopefully continue to introduce new nanotech features into the base Pixel 8 series device. And if the company can get AI to work on this base model, it can also make some things work on the upcoming Pixel 8a , which is rumored to have very similar specs to the main Pixel 8 series.
Of course, there was a lot of noise when Google announced that the Pixel 8 would not offer nanotechnology features. In particular, the above discussion about “hardware limitations” looked like a ploy aimed at increasing sales of the Pixel 8 Pro among consumers.
However, since Samsung is bringing Galaxy AI features to older Galaxy devices , it doesn’t make sense for Google to claim such issues, especially since many of the same features found in Samsung phones rely on Google’s AI developments.
There is no actual release date for the AI features, although Google has said it will start testing them in the next developer build of PIxel 8.
