Waze Just Gave You Six More Reasons to Ditch Google Maps
If you use your phone’s navigation apps frequently, then you’ve probably spent a lot of time with Google Maps or even Apple Maps; both offer reliable navigation capabilities. But Google’s other navigation app, Waze, also continues to receive new updates that make it extremely useful for some trips.
If you live in a busy urban area, then Waze may be your best option thanks to crowdsourced data. And the latest update to the Waze app aims to make this data even more useful. Here are six changes for the better:
Best directions for navigating roundabouts
One of the most useful new updates is the improved handling of roundabouts in Waze. While these circles can be useful for reducing traffic congestion, they can be confusing for drivers using navigation apps. Waze will now tell you which lane to take when entering a roundabout so you don’t miss the exit.
Improved speed limit notifications
Waze is also adding a better way to keep up with changing speed limits. It’s very easy to miss a speed limit change, especially when you’re traveling in urban areas where it happens frequently. Waze will now provide up-to-date information about where speed limits are changing, including clear markers for the new speed along your route.
Improved alerts for emergency services
Google is also adding new alerts to help you keep up with first responders, which the company says should help them keep your routes safe. The update will show you a mark of where the emergency vehicle was registered; you can confirm that he is still here, or inform others that he has already left. The feature is only available in a few countries at the moment, but Google is looking to expand it.
Improved parking information
Waze also hopes to improve the way you find parking while traveling. You’ll now be able to view more detailed information about garages, including how much they cost, whether they have wheelchair access, whether they have valet parking, and even whether they offer electric vehicle charging. Google has teamed up with Flash to implement these updates, and they are gradually rolling out to major cities in the US and Canada.
More information about road hazards and local conditions
Finally, Google and Waze say the latest update will alert you to road hazards like bad weather, railroad crossings and potholes to help you “navigate like a local.” Given the active Waze community, the result should be more useful information in places with more Waze users. Waze will also offer more detailed information about road conditions and reasons for delays.
