Meta Deletes All Oculus Accounts
When Meta (then Facebook) acquired Oculus in 2014 , it was unclear whether the company would embed its own brand into the fashion VR company’s products. Fast forward a decade, and we have a clear answer: Having already rebranded Oculus Quest as Meta Quest, the company is preparing to delete your Oculus account and all the data you’ve accumulated with past Quest headsets unless you move it to Meta.
According to The Verge , Meta sent an email to users last week outlining the terms of the changes:
We sent you an email on 10/31/22 regarding your Oculus account and the need to upgrade to a Meta account to continue using Meta VR products. Your Oculus account is scheduled to be deleted on 3/29/24.
If your Oculus Account is deleted, you will no longer be able to use Meta Quest with your Oculus Account, and you will not be able to reactivate or obtain anything from the account, including:
All your apps and in-app purchases
Existing app store credits
Your achievements
List of your friends
Any content you create using your Oculus account.
To maintain access to the items listed above, you may need to switch to a Meta account using the email address associated with your Oculus ID before March 29th.
2024. Learn more about meta accounts here. You can go here to access your Meta account using a web browser. Note. When you complete this process, you must use the email address associated with your Oculus account to transfer your Oculus account data to your Meta account.
Thank you,
– Meta command
This is a radical step, but not out of the blue. Meta infamously started forcing users to create Facebook accounts to use Meta headsets back in 2020, before allowing users to set up Meta accounts in 2022 instead . In January 2023, they ruled that you can no longer sign into your Oculus account, so chances are most active Quest users aren’t using Oculus accounts anymore anyway. However, if you still have an Oculus account linked to your Quest headset, you’ll lose a lot of data if you don’t transfer your account before March 29th.
How to Transfer Your Oculus Account to a Meta Account
To keep your apps, purchases, achievements, friends, and content linked to your Oculus account, you’ll need to switch to a Meta account. You can start by going to the Meta settings page here . According to The Verge, you can sign up for a Meta account with at least the same email address you used for your Oculus account.
