ChatGPT Will Get Long-Term Memory

ChatGPT may soon be able to remember what you say to it between conversations. Earlier this week, OpenAI announced it was experimenting with a form of “long-term” memory for an AI chatbot that should allow it to remember things between interactions.

The feature is currently only available to a small number of ChatGPT users, but OpenAI says it will be able to remember things like whether you prefer meeting notes summarized in a certain way, or whether you told ChatGPT that you have a store next door . He can then remember this information and use it to provide better answers whenever you ask him specific questions.

One nice thing about this upcoming feature is that OpenAI puts a lot of control in the hands of users. You can manage your ChatGPT personalization settings from the Settings > Personalization > Memory page. If this setting is disabled, ChatGPT will not remember things you tell it not to do. You’ll also be able to view and delete specific memories, or clear them all in one action.

The goal here, according to OpenAI, is for memories in ChatGPT to evolve along with your interactions, without tying them to specific conversations. And deleting an old chat won’t erase the memories you have of it in ChatGPT either, so those of us who like cleaner chats won’t have to keep old conversations for too long.

If you like having memory on but want to talk to ChatGPT, which doesn’t record anything, you can also use what OpenAI calls temporary chat, which is sort of the equivalent of an incognito window. This chat will not appear in your history, will not use memory, and will not be used to train any OpenAI models.

You can also further customize ChatGPT’s memory by setting your own instructions for how much you want it to know about you, and even how you’d like to react. OpenAI says it provides these controls to users to ensure its privacy and security standards are in line with ChatGPT’s advancements.

Please be aware that various ChatGPT plugins may also affect the use of your information, so this is always something to keep in mind.
