Don’t Download This Fake LastPass App
LastPass has issued a public message to all of its users. The password manager, which has become quite popular due to its ease of use, reports that a fraudulent application posing as LastPass has appeared in the Apple App Store.
The app is called LassPass Password Manager and can appear when you search for the LastPass app in the App Store. The app clearly copies the branding that LastPass uses, as well as the user interface that LastPass has become known for.
However, this isn’t just an attempt to copy what LastPass does. The company also says that published screenshots of the app show obvious spelling errors, indicating that the app is a scam and is trying to trick LastPass users. It’s listed under developer Parvati Patel and notes that it’s for the iPad.
LastPass says it is doing everything possible to ensure the app is removed.
At the time of writing, I was unable to find this app in the iOS App Store. However, even if it has been removed, users who downloaded the app before it was removed are still at risk. If this is you, uninstall it immediately to avoid any problems and change any passwords you may have saved or entered into it.
Similar apps can appear on the App Store when a developer manages to bypass standard Apple or Google security checks. Unfortunately, all you can do when you find an app like this is report it to Apple or Google so it can be removed before it affects too many people.
Obviously, such an app ends up in the public App Store listings, and this helps highlight why you should always carefully review the apps you download to your device before installing them.
