Use This Formula to Make Your Own Deodorizing Spray
The best way to get rid of unpleasant odors in your home is to find the source and eliminate or clean it. But even if you do this, you may still be left with odors that didn’t receive an eviction notice. Perhaps you have guests over and want to refresh your bed linen with something nice. Or you can’t get rid of the smell of yesterday’s roasted garlic in the kitchen. Whatever the reason, it helps to have something nice-smelling at the ready.
Luckily, it’s easy and relatively inexpensive to make yourself. In fact, you can create a wide variety of scents by following a simple formula: water + base + (optional) fragrance. Here’s how to make a deodorizing spray at home.
How to make your own home deodorizing spray
Start with a clean, empty spray bottle, then add odor neutralizing base, some water (ideally distilled), and fragrance (if you choose to do so):
Select base
Choose one of the following options and pour it into a spray bottle along with one cup of (preferably distilled) water:
-
Vodka : 1 glass (cheap vodka will do)
-
Witch hazel (unscented) : 1 cup.
-
Rubbing alcohol : 1/4 cup
-
Distilled white vinegar : 1/2 teaspoon
If you don’t plan on adding any flavoring to the spray, opt for vodka or witch hazel.
Add flavor
Now it’s time to add the scent(s) of your choice (if you wish) to the spray by choosing one or a combination of the following scents:
Essential oils
Anywhere from five to 30 drops of one or a combination of the following:
-
Lemon oil
-
Lavender oil
-
Eucalyptus oil
-
Peppermint oil
-
bergamot oil
-
Orange oil
-
Rosemary oil
-
Tea tree oil
-
Chamomile oil
-
Grapefruit oil
-
Cinnamon oil
-
Cedarwood oil
-
White fir oil
-
Clove oil
Extracts
One tablespoon:
-
Vanilla extract
-
Almond extract
-
Peppermint extract
-
Or some combination of the above
Citrus peels
Choose peelings from:
-
Oranges
-
Lemons
-
Limes
-
Grapefruits
Fresh herbs
A few sprigs of fresh herbs, for example:
-
Rosemary
-
Basil
-
Mint
-
Lavender
-
Sage
-
Thyme
When in doubt, keep it simple and stick to one or two complementary scents.
Shake and spray
Once you’re happy with the aroma (or lack thereof), make sure the spray bottle is tightly closed, then shake it thoroughly to combine all the ingredients. Now you’re ready to spray your bed linen, trash can, couch, or any other area where you can use deodorant. Moving forward, shake the sprayer well before each use.
