Why You Shouldn’t Claim the PS5 Versions of Remastered PS Plus Games

PlayStation Matrix has experienced an issue that may cause you to lose access to your paid games. If you have purchased a PS5 upgrade for any PS4 games, you should avoid installing those games through Sony’s PS Plus subscription service . A Reddit user discovered that if you do this, you’ll lose access to the PS5 upgrade entirely if your PS Plus subscription expires.

What’s happening with PlayStation updates?

If you’re purchasing a PS Plus subscription, it’s very tempting to claim the PS5 versions of games you already own on the service. After all, it’s free, which means you don’t have to use the original PS4 game disc at all. However, this creates a problem. Once you pick up the PS Plus version of any game, it will take precedence over the PS5 upgrade you purchased. If your subscription expires at any point, you will lose access to the paid upgrade and will only be left with the PS4 version.

The PS Plus subscription service, similar to Netflix for PlayStation games, has launched after Sony introduced the option to purchase an upgrade for the PS5. This problem appears to be one of those edge cases that has escaped notice. Let’s hope Sony updates the PS5 software to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

How to protect purchased PlayStation upgrades

For now, the only solution to protect your upgrades is to not install the PS Plus versions of these games and continue to play them through the PS5 upgrade you’ve already purchased. Most of us, including the aforementioned Reddit user, don’t like having to constantly insert a disc to access a PS5 update. Even if you bought a PS5 upgrade for any game like Gran Turismo 7 , God of War Ragnarok or Death Stranding , you’ll still have to insert a PS4 disc to access the upgraded version if you claim the rights to the game. You have been warned.
