Why LG’s New UltraGear OLED Is My Next Favorite Gaming Monitor

LG aims to revolutionize the way gamers choose new monitors: Instead of forcing them to choose between super-fast refresh rates or high-resolution images, the company’s new UltraGear OLED lineup will offer a switch that lets them switch between 480Hz and 1080P resolution. and 240 Hz at 4K. This is the first time we’ve seen a “dual frequency” feature on a monitor and I can’t wait to add it to my desk.

Unveiled last week before the tech world got lost in the throes of CES, the LG UltraGear 32GS95UE will let you easily switch between resolution and refresh rate with the flick of a switch. It’s an intriguing feature that took me by surprise at first, but I’m honestly surprised we haven’t seen something like this before.

Of course, there are a number of reasons why a dual Hz monitor is tempting: the most important of them is the ability to switch between resolution and refresh rate depending on what game you’re playing. Many competitive gamers like to play their shooters and competitive games at lower 1080P resolutions. I currently use two 4K monitors, but usually lower their resolution if I’m playing a shooter and want the highest frame rate possible on my hardware. The image is still clear, but it requires opening your monitor settings in Windows and changing them manually.

With the LG UltraGear 32GS95UE, I wouldn’t have to do that—I’d just have to flip a switch. When running in 1080P mode, I’ll be able to take advantage of double the maximum frame rate; but not all games are created equal, so when I want to play Starfield or Red Dead Redemption 2 in 4K, I won’t have to take extra steps to do so.

However, if that toggle wasn’t enough to sell me, there’s also the fact that the new 32-inch monitor will offer a gray-to-gray response time of 0.03 milliseconds, which is exceptionally important. Many gaming monitors offer a 1ms GtG response time, so this will help avoid any additional artifacts or blurring when using them.

LG also noted that the new monitor will support high-quality HDR images with DCI-P3 98.5 percent at 400 nits of brightness. It also has a virtually bezel-less design that’s perfect for pairing two of these bad boys together, and it even has built-in speakers for those days when I can’t feel my headphones.

Honestly, the only thing holding me back from buying this new monitor at the moment is the price, which LG has not yet revealed. However, as soon as the company announces it, it will begin.
