If you got Meta Quest 3 for the holidays, it’s a big world out there/inside, and getting started can be challenging. So I’ve put together a collection of must-haves, focusing on apps, games, and utilities that take advantage of the Quest 3’s improved hardware and mixed reality capabilities.

(If no one bought you a Quest 3 this year, buy yourself one . You deserve it. For more information on the pros and cons of the new standalone VR platform , check out my review .)

Drop Dead: The Cabin : I love the mixed reality mode in Drop Dead: The Cabin . It replaces your room’s windows and doors with game-specific portals, supplies you with weapons and ammo, and releases zombies to invade your home. It’s like living in Dawn of the Dead.

Assassin’s Creed: Nexus VR : This Assassin’s Creed game combines stealth gaming and virtual reality. The Nexus really takes advantage of the Quest 3’s expanded power and delivers some of the best AAA gaming out there.

Asgard’s Wrath 2 : At the time of publication, Asgard’s Wrath 2 has only been out for a few days, so I haven’t played enough of it to comment on the entire game, but I will say this: if the rest of the game is good, as the first few hours are, it’s the best game ever… or released in virtual reality.

Vegas Infinite : This free game is for casual players. It allows you to play poker, blackjack, roulette, craps and slot machines in virtual casinos with virtual money, but the people you play with are real. It’s relaxing, social, and takes advantage of the Quest 3’s pass-through cameras as well as improved hand and eye tracking.

Necessary utilities for Meta Quest 3

Side Quest: This app allows you to download and install apps on your Quest 3 that aren’t available in the Meta Store, so if you’re interested in expanding the capabilities of your VR headset, Side Quest is a must-have. It gives you access to a huge collection of tech demos, games, apps and more, and gives you new options to customize and improve your Quest 3 experience. You’ll also need Side Quest to install Quest Game Optimizer.

Optimizer for quest games . If you’re even remotely “serious” about gaming, consider this $10 utility. It allows you to control game resolution, improve graphics quality in many Quest games, as well as control frame rate, record video, and access other settings.

Virtual Desktop : Virtual Desktop allows you to connect to your computer wirelessly in virtual reality. In addition to streaming videos, browsing the web, and other activities on your computer, you can use it to run PCVR games on your Quest 3 (if you’re using a Windows 10 or 11 PC designed for VR gaming) while unlocked. new level of gameplay.

Must-Have Video Streaming Apps for Meta Quest 3

Bigscreen : This social video streaming app lets you watch movies and TV shows with other people in the Metaverse on the VR equivalent of a 100-foot video screen. You can stream YouTube, Disney+, Twitch, and PlutoTV, rent movies, or watch videos stored on your computer, alone or with others.

XStadium: If you’re into sports, XStadium is mind-blowing. This allows you to watch NBA games live, giving you a complete 360-degree basketball immersion. You can also immerse yourself in UFC fights from the octagon, watch the madness of the X-games, watch good old-fashioned wrestling and enjoy other sports in either 360° or multi-screen mixed reality.

DeoVR : With this app, you can watch and customize all kinds of video content—and not just porn. But if you’re interested in the new possibilities of virtual reality pornography , this is the video app for you.

Must-Have Fitness Apps for Meta Quest 3

Les Mills BodyCombat: Whether you want to sweat it out in virtual reality or mixed reality, Les Mills has you covered. BodyCombat offers tons of martial arts-inspired workouts and expert virtual trainers, and doesn’t require a subscription.

Supernatural : Subscription-based Supernatural is my favorite fitness app for the Quest. I’m a huge music snob, and finding an app with actual music that I actually liked was completely shocking. The trainers are charismatic and the workouts are almost as fun as Beat Saber. I’m crossing my fingers that Supernatural can somehow take advantage of mixed reality.

The Thrill of the Fight : This boxing simulator provides the toughest workout of any VR app—shadowboxing at full speed is no joke—but it’s also incredibly addictive, so it’ll make you sweat. The addition of a mixed reality mode is amazingly effective at bringing boxing matches into your home.
