How to Share Your Location in the Find My App on IPhone
Sharing location is one of those set-it-and-forget-it things, but can be useful in a pinch. For example, if you’re lucky enough to get separated from friends or family while out and about, sharing location data can help you find each other. You might also be interested in finding out what your closest contacts are up to (just don’t be surprised when they ask you to track them down).
When you share your location on iPhone, the people you share it with can find your exact location on a map in the Find My app. It’s easy to set up if you know where to look.
How to enable location sharing in Find My
Find My is your one-stop shop for tracking friends, devices, and items. This includes everything from your iPad, AirPods and AirTags, as well as any friends and family members you share your location with.
To start sharing your location in Find My, open the app. Then click “Me” in the lower right corner. You should see a toggle to enable “Share my location.”
If it is already active, the switch will be green; otherwise it will be gray. Tapping on “Location” will give you several options for assigning an alias to your current location, such as “Home”, “Work”, “School”, etc.
How to Share Your Location on iPhone in Find My
To share your location with friends or family, go to the Find My app. Then click on the People tab. After that, tap the + icon and select Share your location from the pop-up menu.
Another menu will appear where you can enter the name with whom you want to share your location. After selecting a person and clicking “Submit”, you’ll be given the option to choose how long to share your location. You can share your location for an hour, for the rest of the day, or indefinitely. The latter is what most people choose when they want to become “friends” on Find My, and the first two are good for temporarily sharing your location with a contact. This way, you won’t accidentally forget to disconnect from sharing.
Pro tip: You can also share your location with someone in Messages. Just tap his name at the top of the screen, tap “Share your location ” and select the desired time period. The same can be done from a contact card in Contacts. Apple likes to offer multiple ways to do the same thing.
How to Stop Sharing Your Location on iPhone in Find My
Sometimes you want to stop sharing with people for one reason or another. To stop sharing your location, return to the Find My app. Click on the People tab and select the person you’re sharing your location with. From here, select “Stop sharing my location” and you won’t have to worry about them tracking you in the future.
