Make the Best PSL With Pumpkin Seed Oil
I’m not a big Starbucks fan. Not because it’s a big corporation (or anything similarly noble), but because I live in Brooklyn and have become something of a coffee snob without even trying. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy a candy-foamy PSL in the fall. Since I drink coffee at an alarming rate, I started making pumpkin spice lattes at home using one ingredient that has it all: Bonne Maman Pumpkin Spice Spread.
Most recipes I’ve seen that mimic the famous fall drink involve making the syrup from scratch or creating your own pumpkin puree spread. There’s nothing wrong with that, but my cravings are lazy. Adding a spoonful of pumpkin paste to my espresso is easy.
How to Make a Simple Pumpkin Spice Latte
The only thing you need to do is make sure that the pumpkin paste dissolves in the hot liquid, whether it’s hot espresso or hot milk. If you want to make an ice-cold drink, dissolve the paste in a little hot water to thin it out before adding the cold ingredients.
Dissolving pumpkin paste
For an eight-ounce latte, add one tablespoon of Bonne Maman to a cup. Pour a two-ounce shot of espresso directly into the cup or pull it out separately and then pour. I have Nespresso (coffee lovers are allowed to enjoy Nespresso) so I threw in a lungo capsule and it dripped straight into the cup. my coffee cup. Use a spoon, fork, mini whisk or milk frother to dissolve the pumpkin spice.
Add milk
Heat and froth the milk of your choice. I poured 3/4 cup of almond milk into a mug and microwaved it for 30 seconds until it steamed. Again, I have a lazy craving. If you have a steam wand, be sure to use it. Use a milk frother to add bubbles and pour the milk over the pumpkin spice espresso in the cup. Sprinkle cinnamon, nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice on top and enjoy.
I found this at ShopRite, but if you can’t find Bonnet Maman pumpkin paste, try any of these:
- Stonewall Kitchen Maple Pumpkin Oil
- Pumpkin oil at a great price
- Grandma Hoerner’s Anniversary with Pumpkin Butter
Just one tablespoon is enough to match the sweetness and heat level of a Starbucks drink, but if you prefer your drink to be sweeter or a little less strong than the real thing, adjust the size accordingly. I love the taste of Bonne Maman, but there are many other brands that offer similar blends like the ones listed above. Such products are called “pumpkin oil”. Regardless of the name, what you’re looking for is a translucent, jam-like spread that isn’t actually butter or margarine. One jar probably contains 10 to 12 tablespoons, so it looks like you’ll have a lot of PSL in the future.
