Welcome to the Adult Kitchen

Hello and welcome to Adult Kitchen. While Ellie and I usually focus on helping people cook better, smarter, and faster through tips, tricks, and (of course) hacks, here we’re getting back to basics and giving true culinary novices the attention they deserve.

When I say “basics”, this is what I mean. You won’t find a single recipe, but you will find tips on choosing the pots, pans, knives, spatulas, shortening and seasonings most recipes require. Not every kitchen needs every kitchen tool, and we’ll help you narrow down the items you need based on what you want to cook while staying within your budget.

If you have a favorite chef’s knife, an immersion circulator, or can explain the difference between kosher and table salt (without Googling), this series is not for you, although you can certainly read it. This is for people who have been breaking out of the department store knife pile for a long time and buying a quality blade (and learning how to care for it), for those who are eager to understand the difference between black and rainbow peppers, and for people who don’t know the difference between a dry measuring cup and a wet one. .

Whether you’ve just moved out from your parents and are looking to set up your first kitchen, want to switch from non-stick cookware to cast iron, or are trying to break your takeout habit by learning to cook for yourself, we’re here. to help.

Everyone can learn to cook, and Ellie and I understand that the sheer volume of cookbooks, gadgets, recipes and tips can be overwhelming. But if you arm yourself with the right tools and an understanding of how to use them, cooking can be fun, easy and satisfying. So relax, know you’re in good hands, and let us help you create your own adult kitchen.
