You Should Make Tiny Frozen Scrambled Eggs. Reddit Hates
It’s always fun to watch the internet get mad about food. I’m pretty good at recognizing outrage-inducing dishes (before the outrage even starts), and one thing I know with complete certainty is that most people don’t appreciate fad. Case in point: these tiny scrambled eggs that are causing quite a stir on Reddit .
If you’re not on TikTok, you probably haven’t come across this method . It’s pretty simple: freeze an egg (shell and all), then peel it, slice it, and fry the slices to create a “mini fried egg.” Reddit and TikTok are diametrically opposed in my opinion, so I’m not surprised that earlier keyboard warriors were outraged by the harmless stupidity of a sliced-and-fried frozen egg:
My little sister just asked me if we could freeze eggs, peel them, then slice and fry them. She says she saw someone do it on TikTok but can’t find the video now. As much trouble as people here have with peeling a boiled egg, I can’t imagine a frozen egg would be any easier or wouldn’t break/explode in the freezer.
I’m glad she’s learning to cook, but I think it’s a really bad idea. Thoughts? Experience?
As a lover of scrambled eggs and a champion of whimsy, I knew I had to try this.
How to freeze an egg in its shell
I’ve always read that you should crack the egg into a separate container, such as an ice cube tray, before freezing, but it turns out whole, eggs in the shell freeze fine, with one caveat: According to the USDA , freezing eggs is perfectly acceptable. whole ones are not perfect, as they may crack when frozen. But as long as the shell does not crack, the egg is safe to use. (If the egg is cracked, throw it away.)
Unlike some boiled eggs, frozen ones are very easy to peel. Run them under warm water for about 30 seconds to cool, then crack and peel them as usual. The egg will be slippery and cold, but it will be whole.
How to cut a frozen egg
From here it’s fairly easy to cut the egg, although you may want to place a paper towel under it to keep it from slipping off. Using a sharp knife, make the slices as thin or thick as you like; I tried several sizes and they all fit fine, although a larger piece will make the yolk more viscous.
The eggs start to melt pretty quickly, so make sure your pan is hot and ready to go before you start peeling and cutting them. (The melting egg has a strange texture, cold and slippery, but not entirely unpleasant.)
How to Fry a Sliced Frozen Egg
Place a nonstick frying pan over medium heat and add about a tablespoon of butter. Let the butter melt and sizzle until it begins to brown, then add the egg slices. Cook them until the white is completely set and the yolk turns into jam. If you like, you can flip them over in the pan or leave them sunny side up. You won’t get a completely runny yolk, but you will get a nice balance of soft, runny yolk and crispy fried white.
Freezing did not affect the taste; These little guys tasted like any other scrambled egg, only they were smaller and had a better yolk to white ratio. Long story short: they’re fun and I ate them with my hands.
Who is suitable for mini scrambled eggs?
These are eggs for babies, and I mean that as a compliment. They are intended for children and stupid adults (like me). Unless you have a ridiculous amount of eggs, there’s no real reason to store them in the freezer, but I can’t deny that I find the little, almost cartoonish-looking eggs absolutely adorable, and even though I don’t have many toddlers around, I feel like this presentation they will like it. Make tiny breakfast sandwiches on miniature pancakes or serve them simply with a side of bacon. (I suspect quail eggs would also appeal to little ones, but they are a much cheaper option.)
