This Hidden Tweak Will Make Your Instagram Photos Better

Your smartphone takes great photos—so much so that most of us don’t bother with a dedicated DSLR camera these days, especially for the images we upload to Instagram. We know our phone photos are high quality and that will be reflected in our curated Instagram feeds.

Well, not necessarily. Even though your photos and videos on your iPhone or Android are high quality, they may not reach the same quality by the time they reach Instagram. And it’s not your fault: it’s Instagram.

Apparently, there is an option in Instagram settings that will ensure that your photos and videos are uploaded in the highest quality that Instagram allows. The problem is that this option is disabled by default . If you’ve never enabled it before, or have changed phones and installed Instagram from scratch, chances are this setting is disabled in your app.

This means that Instagram will adjust the quality of your uploads based on the quality of your network: if you have a superfast connection, your media will probably be uploaded in high quality. If the connection is poor, Instagram will compress your content at its discretion. Of course, we don’t really know how this feature works behind the scenes, so it’s impossible to say how much Instagram reduces quality and under what conditions. In a time of unlimited data plans and lots of Wi-Fi connections, it’s best to just leave it turned on forever.

How to upload to Instagram in the highest possible quality

You can check it out right now: Open Instagram, go to your profile, tap the hamburger menu in the top right corner, then select Settings & Privacy. Here, scroll down, click on Data Usage and Media Quality, then make sure the switch next to Download at Maximum Quality is turned on.
