You Must Install These Pull Out Kitchen Cabinets
Do you need to use a stepladder to get to high cabinet shelves? Do you have mobility issues that make it difficult or impossible to reach cabinet shelves? If that sounds like you, or if you’re interested in making your kitchen more universally accessible to patrons, you can replace your regular shelves with drawer cabinet inserts .
You can replace your regular shelves yourself
Pull-out shelves are inserts that fit into your existing cabinets, so it’s not very difficult to replace them. They are designed to move forward and down to reduce the reach needed to get things out of hard to reach places in the back of the closet. They are especially good for awkward high shelves that are difficult to reach even for people with full mobility, and can be added to just about any other cabinet in the kitchen.
Everything you need for self-installation of drawers-inserts:
- The drawer slides in by itself
- Roulette
- Boer
- Screwdrivers
- Pilot drill of suitable size for push-in fittings.
- Pencil
Measure Before Buying
Before buying cabinet inserts, you need to measure the depth and width of the cabinets you want to add drawers to. You will also need to measure the opening at the front of your cabinets if it differs from the overall width of the shelves (for example, due to how the doors are hung). When ordering, consider any appliances or other items that may interfere with the operation of the insert – you will need about 30 inches of free space in front of the front of the cabinet.
If you have standard sized cabinets, you can probably use a pre-made insert that matches the internal dimensions of the cabinet. For custom or old house cabinets, you may be able to find something close that fits, or you may need to call the manufacturer to see if they can make a custom insert.
Remove old shelves
Once you have your shelf inserts, begin the installation process by removing the shelves inside the cabinet you wish to replace. Some shelves will be held in place by fasteners using screws, while others will simply rest on pins. Remove any existing shelf hardware to make room for new drawers.
Check and mark the location of your equipment
Most drawers are ready to mount to the bottom of the cabinet with screws or mounting hardware located at the base of the insert, while others are designed to be attached to the sides of the cabinet. Whatever type of insert you have, place it in the closet before attempting to install it to make sure it fits correctly. Use a pencil to mark where the hardware will be located so you can pre-drill the holes to install it. Remove the insert and use a small pilot drill to drill the mounting holes. It is recommended to use a drill ring or wrap several layers of tape around the bottom of the drill to avoid accidentally drilling into the cabinet wall or floor. Measure the thickness of the cabinet and then limit the depth of the drill to about one eighth of an inch from that measurement.
Install pull-out inserts and enjoy easier access to your closets.
Place the drawers back into the cabinet and attach them to the bottom of the cabinet using the hardware provided by the manufacturer. Do a test run of the insert before putting anything on the shelves to make sure it works without a hitch. Now you can reorganize your shelves and use a drawer for better access to all your kitchen supplies.
