Make Quick French Toast With Melted Ice Cream
There are countless French toast recipes out there, and another one is about to arrive. However, this may be the last prescription you will ever need. Aside from bread, this recipe calls for two ingredients, and oddly enough, you can get any flavor you want without adding extra ingredients. That is, any flavor you can find in your ice cream department. For quick, rich, flavorful French toast, melt some ice cream.
French toast is made from strong toasted bread dipped in sweet egg custard. This is where the recipes come from. Do you add milk or heavy cream? Maybe split it in half? Sweeten your custard with brown sugar or maple syrup? Add vanilla. Wait, add secret banana puree instead. You can make a 12-ingredient custard or simply use a ready-made creamy liquid that has already reached the perfect balance between sweetness and flavor. Even if you go back to your old French toast recipe, melted ice cream is a great saver if you run out of the cream or milk you normally use. It’s worth noting that this trick works with non-dairy “frozen desserts” as well.

To make French toast with custard, grab a pint of your favorite ice cream. In a wide bowl, melt about a quarter cup of ice cream (this is the same as four tablespoons). You can do this in the microwave, just heat the balls for about 15 seconds and stir until they are completely melted. You don’t need to make it too hot. Beat one egg and beat it thoroughly with the melted ice cream. Here it is. Rich, flavorful, sweet custard is ready in about a minute.
Add two slices of bread to soak the custard, flipping when one side is completely soaked. Fry the slices in an oiled skillet over medium-low heat. After a minute or two, check the toast for browning and turn the toast over. Fry for about a minute and cool briefly on a wire rack before serving.
I tried this recipe several times because, frankly, I had a lot of fun making flavorful, extract-free French toast. I used coffee ice cream, salted caramel ice cream and raspberry sorbet. Coffee was my favorite, probably because I’m addicted to caffeine, but the raspberry sorbet had the strongest taste. All three were perfectly sweetened, with crispy edges and a fluffy interior, regardless of the flavor I used. Please note that since sorbet is basically fruit puree with syrup, the melted product is quite liquid. Add another egg to the mixture for a more structured toast.
