You Can Make Boring Glass Look Like Sea Glass
If you have clear glass decor that you’re tired of, or if you’ve found a great piece at a thrift store but the color isn’t exactly what you want, you might think your only option is to replace it. But before you do that, you have one more option: you can give them a beachy look with sea glass paint . This spray paint is designed for glass and acts as a pigment and frost at the same time. Here’s how to get that sea glass look without beach combing.
What is sea glass paint?
Sea glass paint is a translucent frost that can be applied to any non-food glassware. While it’s not food safe and won’t stand up to washing outdoors or in the dishwasher, it’s great for anything made of glass. You can apply sea glass paint in one coat, so this is an easy DIY project suitable for beginners.
For this project you will need:
- Insulating tape
- rag or newspaper
- Sea glass paint
- And protective gear
Because sea glass paint comes as a spray paint , you should use it outdoors and always use goggles , gloves , and a mask when working with it. When using oil-based spray paint, it’s best to stay away from plastic masking as the propellant in the spray will chemically react with some plastics, melting them and causing holes to form.
Do not use sea glass paint on plastic or metal objects as it is only meant to stick to glass. Similarly, avoid using it on plexiglass or plexiglass because it will melt the surface. This paint is recommended to be used only on bare glass.
How to paint sea glass
First, make sure your glass surface is clean and dry. To prepare the surface, start by masking off any areas you don’t want to paint. For larger objects, you can use masking paper to cover larger areas. Make sure your tape provides a complete seal because spray paint can get into just about any opening.
Once you’ve finished masking, it’s time to paint. Hold the can about a foot from your surface and use slow, sweeping motions. Try not to spray too much paint on one spot, as the paint may bleed. It’s best to let the first coat dry and then apply a second coat if you have thin areas. Since sea glass paint cannot be sanded and repainted, take your time spraying it for the best result.
After you apply the paint, it will dry to the touch in about five minutes, but you should wait 15 minutes before touching it. After that, you can use the updated glassware as usual.
