Pizza Your Oatmeal Immediately
For veteran readers, you know we’re big fans of savory oatmeal here at Skillet at the moment. Bring eggs, meatballs, and monosodium glutamate, please. And why stop there? Oats are your canvas and today we are painting with pizza.
In any case, Oatmeal isn’t really the star of the show – it’s more of a supporting cast. To make it great-tasting, blend soft, earthy oats with a punchy flavor and texture. The best place to start your search is with your other favorite products. As far as popular dishes go, pizza is a great place to start. Pizza crust is just plain bread. Oatmeal is just plain oats. Anything that’s good on pizza crust will be good on oatmeal. This is science.
Prepare old-fashioned hot oatmeal according to package directions, or as you normally would. I boiled one glass of water and half a glass of oats until the water was completely absorbed and the cereal was soft. Add two to three tablespoons of grated mozzarella. It’s pretty hard to measure with a tablespoon, but I basically did three big pinches with three fingers of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Stir the cheese to melt into the hot oatmeal, and add about two tablespoons of marinara sauce and a pinch of salt.
The cheese melts with creamy stretchy threads, and the tomato sauce comes out bright, tangy, and tangy. It’s, well, like a plate full of pizza. I used a simple tomato sauce with garlic and onions, but my next choice would be a hearty meat sauce like bolognese. It’s a “plain slice” but if you like toppings, it’s time to add them. I added some chopped olives and extra cheese. Try adding sliced pepperoni, torn basil, caramelized onions, crumbled sausage, anchovies, or, to make me proud, add some ham and pineapple. Toss it all together or scatter on top for a fun pizza.
