The Best (and Worst) Places to Install an Air Purifier
As we have learned over the past few weeks, wildfire smoke is no longer a problem primarily limited to the west coast, and is likely to become a regular occurrence in the rest of the country in the future.
Given that smoke can affect indoor air quality, interest in and sales of air purifiers have skyrocketed since the first plume of smoke hit the East Coast earlier this month. And when it comes to getting the most out of your home, it matters where you place it in your home. Here are some examples of the best and worst places to install an air purifier.
Best Places to Install an Air Purifier
Some of the best places in your home for your air purifier include:
- Relatively clean area : Nothing should touch the top, back, or sides of the air purifier. Ideally, it should have a gap of at least 6 inches on each side.
- At entry points : Contaminants can enter and flow through places such as doorways, hallways and windows.
- Near (but not in contact with) a source of pollutants or allergens : for example , a kitchen stove, a pet’s bed, or a dust-prone area.
- Rooms where you spend a lot of time : bedrooms, living room , office, etc.
- In the center of open-plan homes : that is, if you use one large air purifier for the entire floor.
- In separate rooms in other types of houses : If the house is not open-plan, choose smaller models for bedrooms and other rooms, placed on one side of the room (but not in contact with anything).
Worst Places to Install an Air Purifier
Do not install the air purifier in places that may block the air supply , including:
- Right against the wall
- On the shelf
- In the corner
- Behind or under furniture
Other places to avoid include:
- Near vents or radiators (so as not to overheat )
- In direct sunlight (same)
- Damp or damp parts of the house (you need to change the filter more often)
- Near electronics (may cause interference to TVs and disrupt Wi-Fi routers)
Finally, if you are going to invest in an air purifier or build one yourself , make sure it has a HEPA filter and a MERV rating of at least 13.
