What’s New on Disney+ in June 2023

It’s been a tough 2023 for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania disappointing financially, critically and in almost every way , and even the long-delayed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opens lower box office than its predecessor. But the franchise machine can hardly stop to overestimate: the next MCU-adjacent series, Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion , premieres June 21 on Disney+.

I have no idea what’s going on in this series which seems to be related to a bunch of movies I haven’t seen and shows I haven’t watched; all I learned from the trailer is that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is back and looking a little worse with wear and tear, and that the MCU has lured another Oscar winner (Olivia Coleman from The Favorite ) into a trap. If you’ve actually seen anything after Avengers: Endgame , you probably understand the context a lot better than I do. Enjoy, I hope.

If, like me, you’re terribly behind the MCU, you can at least look forward to the streaming premiere of Avatar: The Path of Water (June 7). Whatever you say about James Cameron’s perfectionism, with over ten years between the first film and its sequel, I had no problem with it.

Also releasing this month for some reason: Flamin’ Hot (June 9), a movie about an inventor who came up with the idea for the Flamin’ Hot Cheetoe ( except maybe it doesn’t really exist ), directed by Eva Longoria.
