Make This Lazy Dulce De Leche Toast in 3 Minutes

Toast makes a surprisingly chic sweet snack, especially if you brush it with frangipane (aka bostock ) or brownie dough . I’m always looking for my next toast to dazzle and delight, but I’m afraid I may have discovered the pinnacle of it all. Today I bring you lazy toast dulce de leche and it is the best toast I have ever eaten.

Dulce de leche is a milky caramel paste made with condensed milk cooked over a low heat. It’s one ingredient, but slow, steady heat turns sticky, liquid dairy into a thick paste, like softened butter. The color shifts from creamy white to latte brown, while the enticing milk and sugar flavors take on complexity with toasted malt notes. The only problem is that dulce de leche takes a hell of a lot of time to make (about two or three hours of cooking and another hour of chilling) and there is a small risk of a milk can exploding if you don’t do it right.

Lazy dulce de leche toast for impatient dulce de leche lovers like me. Assembly takes only 30 seconds, and production – 3 minutes. Nothing that spends hours cooking or worrying about cans bursting. The air fryer makes this snack comparatively lightning fast, with almost no cleanup.

Set the fryer to 350°F on “air fry” mode to preheat. Open a can of sweetened condensed milk or take the leftovers out of the refrigerator. Spread a couple tablespoons of sticky paste on one side of a slice of bread. I used the thick sliced brioches I had, but any slice of bread will do. Place the bread with milk in the fryer, milk side up, and let it cook for 3 minutes. Make sure you set the timer because it can go from caramelized to burnt if you forget about it. Take it out and enjoy your dulce de leche toast right away.

Note that this is not a true dulce de leche (things like this happen when you’re lazy), but cutting corners certainly has its benefits. You will notice as soon as you take a bite; the top layer will have a complex, caramelized and toffee-like dulce de leche flavor, and the bottom layer will have a layer of creamy sweetened condensed milk. The combination of flavors – fried and creamy – is great, but the main thing is the texture. Unlike real dulce de leche, which retains its moisture, the sugars in condensed milk exposed to the circulating heat of the fryer caramelize and become crispy around the edges, giving your toast a milky caramel surface with a creamy underside. Against the plush interior of the bread, this creates the illusion of a creamy, custard-like layer in the middle of the toast.

Lazy toast dulce de leche is a real treat. For a suitable easy modification with banana candy toast flavor, add sliced banana to bread and brush with condensed milk before baking.
