Microsoft Will Never Update Windows 10 Again (but You Can Keep Using It)
Windows 11 has come a long way since its first launch , but it still isn’t for everyone. Many Windows 10 fans refuse to update their machines to the latest Microsoft OS: by some estimates , Windows 10 is still used on 73.46% of the computers in the world, and Windows 11 at 20.95%. There are more than a few reasons for this discrepancy, but now that we know there will never be a new update for Windows 10 again, the winds of change may blow.
22H2 is the latest version of Windows 10.
Microsoft announced this in a blog post on Thursday , confirming the fears of Windows 10 users around the world that the current version 22H2 will be the last version of Windows 10 ever . This means that Windows 10 will not receive any new features in the future. The OS as it is today will remain so forever.
This is not surprising news given that the company stopped selling copies of Windows 10 back in January . For their part, Microsoft strongly encourages you to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11. While the company says this is because they want you to be able to enjoy all future Windows updates as they are released, every user who adopts Windows 11 is still one active user who advertises at meetings and events.
But even those who want to upgrade often fail to do so, as Microsoft has strict requirements on which PCs can actually upgrade to Windows 11. The company requires Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 to be installed on your PC for security reasons. , but that excludes many PCs over six years old. You can bypass these restrictions to install Windows 11 on an older, unsupported PC, but this is difficult and not recommended by Microsoft. For many, it’s best to stick with Windows 10 in this situation, especially if a new PC isn’t in the budget.
You can continue to use Windows 10 for a while
So, this is obviously sad news for anyone who loves Windows 10 and doesn’t want Microsoft to abandon this OS. But there is a plus: Microsoft is not completely abandoning the OS – only features and other fun changes.
As Microsoft previously announced, the company will support Windows 10 until October 14, 2025. “Support” is the key word here, and it doesn’t mean adding any of the new software advancements that Microsoft comes up with for Windows; rather, Microsoft has committed to supporting Windows 10 with monthly security updates until that date.
While not as exciting as new feature updates, security updates are undoubtedly the more important product here. Without them, Windows 10 would be left unprotected from every new security hole that attackers discover, as is the case with Windows 7 and 8.1 . Luckily, roughly 70% of the world’s PCs are still running Windows 10, Microsoft will continue to patch any of these threats over the next two and a half years.
If you are one of those PC users who can’t kick their Windows 10 habit, don’t worry. Sure, you’re missing out on new features, but you need third-party apps and utilities anyway. Just remember: you only have until October 14, 2025 to safely spend time with Windows 10. Once that deadline passes, your only safe option is to upgrade to whatever version of Windows Microsoft supports in 2025. Who knows: maybe you will really like this one.
