What’s New on Netflix in May 2023

The era of peak streaming is coming to an end — the riots at HBO Max , the belt-tightening at Paramount+ , whatever happens to Hulu — but Netflix still has very deep pockets. Deep enough to draw in star power that used to cost $20 million a movie. Star power like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jennifer Lopez.

Both promising actors will appear on Netflix in May. Schwarzenegger will star in FUBAR (May 25), a series about a father and daughter who discover they are both CIA agents and needlessly hid their true selves from each other for years. They team up as they try to contain their family drama while saving the world (reminds me a lot of Alias , but whatever).

Meanwhile, Lopez returns to the middle (thrillers about tough women) with The Mother (May 12), in which she plays a killer who lives offline for years and is forced to leave hiding in order to save her child. Not exactly a new premise, but “revenge is mother” is an admittedly good slogan – and it’s from Niki Caro, who directed the Oscar-nominated The Whale Rider , and it’s something.

More new releases will follow in May, including Bridgerton’s spin-off Queen Charlotte (May 4). The third season of the crazy sketch show “I Think You Should Go with Tim Robinson” airs on May 30th to please some Lifehacker (Claire Lower) employees. You can also watch new comedy specials from Wanda Sykes (May 23) and Hannah Gadsby (May 9). And fans of soothing background TV will no doubt be excited about the return of Queer Eye (season 7, which premieres on May 12) and Great British Baking Show: Juniors (May 7).
