Store Blankets by Turning Them Into “pillows”

There is one universal truth that we can all agree on when it comes to blankets: you have too many of them in your home. You have more blankets than you could ever use at once and either don’t have enough space to store them or don’t have the willpower to go back and forth in the closet every night. The solution is to turn your duvets into sofa decor by storing them outdoors.

Method 1: knot

Let’s start with Yvonne Arevalo, a professional organizer and content creator who recently showed her 87,000 TikTok followers two ways to turn throws into throw pillows.

The first method involves twisting the blanket into a knot. Lay the blanket out on a flat surface first, then grasp one of the long sides. Roll the entire piece of fabric into a tube. Tie the tube in a standard knot and, if you have leftover fabric on the sides, tie the two ends back into a knot again. This creates the same decorative throw pillow you can buy on Etsy for $24 or other stores for over $100 . It’s not exactly the same, of course, but remember that in addition to saving money on a fancy knot, you’re also storing your clumsy blanket.

Method 2: decorative pillow

There is a second version of quilt-and-pillow storage that you may be more familiar with. In the video above, Arevalo demonstrates this as well, showing how easy it is to turn a standard toss into a smaller square-shaped puff.

Lay the blanket back on a flat surface. Fold it in half along the longest line down the center, then fold it in half to make four layers. When you have a long thin rectangle, find the center. Take one end of the blanket and fold it inward to meet this center, then repeat the same with the other side so that the outer edges of the blanket meet in the middle. The edges will now be made from pleats; take one and also fold it towards the center. The side that hasn’t been folded in half towards the center forms a sort of pocket into which you can tuck the shorter side. With a little fluff and wiggle, it looks like a throw pillow, and here’s how you can handle it. Put it on the couch and no one will know it’s a blanket in disguise.
