You Can Finally Install Google’s Magic Eraser on Your IPhone or Android
Google Magic Eraser is one of the company’s most impressive ( and one of its most hyped ) features. Who doesn’t love the ability to instantly erase unwanted people or objects from any photo? And while this feature was exclusive to the Pixel from the start, Google is now opening the door to just about every smartphone if you’re willing to pay for it.
What is a magic eraser?
Magic Eraser is one of those features that can sell a smartphone on its own. Launched in 2021 , this feature looks for out-of-place people, objects, or other distractions in your photos, and when it thinks it finds something you don’t want, it recommends deleting it. Click on the recommendation and that part of the photo will be removed.
However, sometimes the system doesn’t catch everything and you can manually choose what to remove from your photos. When you brush or swipe over these areas, Magic Eraser takes effect and removes the objects accordingly. Not only that, the software also predicts what pixels would be there without the objects in place and smoothes the scene, making it look like those objects never existed. There’s also a “Camouflage” feature that changes the color of certain objects to blend in with the rest of the photo.
How to install Magic Eraser on your smartphone
Magic Eraser used to be a Pixel-only feature, which understandably is what you show your friends as the reason you bought a Pixel in the first place. However, Google has decided that Magic Eraser is ready for everyone: whether you have a Pixel, Galaxy, OnePlus, or even – sigh – iPhone, you can now use Magic Eraser on your device… if you pay for it.
Magic Eraser is now part of Google One , Google’s larger subscription service, which means that any Google One subscriber can access the feature through Google Photos. To sweeten the deal, Google is adding a couple of extra features, including an HDR post-processing effect for videos, the ability to style individual photos in the collage editor, new collage styles, and free shipping on any print orders.
Existing Google One features include additional cloud storage (starting at 100 GB), Portrait Light and Portrait Blur editing tools in Google Photos, 10% refund on Google Store purchases, and a 3-month free trial of YouTube Premium, among other benefits. Plans start at $1.99 a month for basic (100GB), $2.99 for standard (200GB), and $9.99 for premium (2TB), the latter of which comes with a VPN and exclusive Google Meet updates.
If you just refuse to pay, that’s okay – Google will offer a free trial of Google One starting in March if you haven’t signed up for the service in the past. It’s not yet clear how long the trial will last or when it will launch in March, but if you wait a bit, you can try Magic Eraser (and the rest of Google One) for free.
