Dry Your Sheets This Winter

Once again , I’m here to champion something small that I believe in in a big way, and it’s this: If you’re cold and don’t have a heater, it’s time to think about everything about your hair dryer. can do for you.

I’ve used this trick for years, mostly because I’ve spent my 20s living in the most ridiculously uninhabitable apartments New York has to offer. I was lucky enough to move into an apartment with real heating a few years ago, but this week I’m attending a special extracurricular course for graduate school entrance and at the age of 30 found myself temporarily living in a dorm… a frosty dorm. My hair dryer is next to me again.

How to warm sheets (and yourself) with a hair dryer

Some places (such as dorms) have regulations against the use of heaters. Some people have a legitimate fear of heaters . This is where a hair dryer comes in handy. There are three ways to use a hair dryer for heat, and the first one includes your blankets.

Once you get home for the night, crawl under the sheets and blankets. They will be cold and I regret it, but it won’t last long. Keep them open and grab the hair dryer, directing the heat down to where your shivering body is. Never hide the dryer under blankets – this can cause a fire. Instead, make sure it’s away from your fabrics by directing the heat underneath. Do this for about 10-15 seconds, then cover yourself with blankets to keep warm. You can repeat as needed, but for now you will be toasted.

How to heat clothes with a hair dryer

Because I’m from North Dakota, I’m familiar with a bunch of absurd ways to keep warm, and it wasn’t until I moved to New York at 18 that I realized that my people’s way of life is incomprehensibly strange to outsiders. However, they prepared me for the humiliations of apartment living. For example, when I was growing up, my mother always put my day clothes at night on the ventilation in our house so that I would be warm when I woke up. (I was spoiled.)

Later in life I adopted this same method with adaptation. As you may have guessed, this concerns my hair dryer. Lay out the clothes and dry them with a dryer. It doesn’t matter if you do it after a shower, in the morning, or before putting on your pajamas at night. As long as the end of your dryer’s filter is not closed, you can even stick the nozzle straight into your sleeves or pant legs. Do this for just a few seconds. It really helps.

Aggressive Method

In my coldest apartment, I just put a hair dryer next to me and let the heat wrap around me while I worked. You can do it too, but you have to do it safely. First, I don’t recommend placing the dryer on the floor at all; Now I’m older and wiser. You can and should keep it facing you or find a way to hang it. You don’t want whatever it’s on to overheat, and you’ll also notice that if you put it down, it rolls back. When it hits something, it can block the vent. We don’t want it; this is dangerous and means less air will pass through the machine.

Don’t do this for too long. It is better to point it at yourself in jerks than to sit with it for a long period of time, like a makeshift heater. The heat you generate in 30-45 seconds of full blasting will last for a while. If you choose to use this method, you should also use a clean hair dryer. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing hair and dust from the vent.
