You Must Be Involved in T-Mobile’s $350 Million Settlement
Back in July , T-Mobile agreed to pay $350 million to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by a number of the company’s customers over a 2021 data breach . At the moment, you can still claim part of the payment, but time is running out. Here’s what you need to know.
Why was a class action lawsuit filed against T-Mobile?
In an August 2021 statement , T-Mobile confirmed that the company’s systems were subjected to a “deepest cyberattack” that compromised data files containing the personal information of approximately 7.8 million current customers and 40 million former or potential customers. This information included first and last names, dates of birth, social security numbers, and driver’s license/ID card information.
In May 2022 , a group of T-Mobile customers affected by the data breach filed a class action lawsuit against the company in which the plaintiffs allege that the number of current, former and potential customers affected is actually around 76 million.
Two months later, T-Mobile filed a settlement proposal in federal court in Kansas City, Missouri, agreeing to pay $350 million to settle customer claims, as well as an additional $150 million to improve data protection. The wireless carrier clarified that this was not an admission of any wrongdoing.
Who can demand money from the settlement?
At this point, most of the people eligible to participate in the class action have already been contacted, but if you feel you have been overlooked, you can find out by emailing the Village Administrator or by calling 833-512-2314.
How much money could you get from the settlement?
The amount you can potentially receive from a T-Mobile settlement depends on the type of claim you are making:
Reimbursement
The first option is to claim money for the unreimbursed cash financial losses you suffered as a result of the data breach, plus $25 an hour to cover the time you spent on remediation.
If you go this route, you can get a maximum refund of $25,000 (between financial losses and lost time). Yes, this is a lot of money, but it will also require a lot of (additional) time and paperwork to get it.
Cash payment
Those who don’t want the hassle of the refund process can get a one-time $25 cash payment from T-Mobile. The only exception to this rule is for individuals who lived in California on August 1, 2021, who may receive a $100 cash payment.
