Four Ways to Make a Christmas Tree With Your Own Hands
Real Christmas trees are not for everyone. You may have harmful pets, toddlers, a small apartment, or a small budget. You may be allergic to trees or the mold spores they bring with them. Perhaps you just like doing things differently. Whatever the reason, there are many ways to create your own tree and make it unique to you. Here are a few ways to make a Christmas tree out of just about anything.
Make a floating decorative tree
To make a hanging tree out of jewelry and fishing line, you’ll need these and some detachable hooks . If you have textured ceilings or a space that cannot accommodate temporary adhesive hooks, you can use ceiling hooks and anchors for this project. (If you go this route, you’ll also need a drill.) Keep in mind that stick-on hooks are rated for around 0.5kg and screw-in hooks are rated for 20kg, so if you’re planning on using heavier jewelry, screw-in options will work. better. Then place the hooks in a circle on the ceiling, one hook for each ornament you like. Smaller “trees” will need less decoration.
After you’ve drawn your circle, start by hanging the decorations closest to the ceiling in the center of your circle and work your way up with longer strands of fishing line so that the edge decorations hang the farthest from the ceiling. This will give you the classic tree shape. If you want to add light, you can hang strings of lights between the decorations.
Making a paper tree
Using cutting paper suspended from the ceiling on a plant hook, a tree shape can be created by using long sheets of paper taken off the roll towards the center of the tree shape and then adding shorter pieces of cutting paper on the outside. Parchment paper or craft paper will also work for this project. To decorate your paper tree, you can use a hole punch or a star-shaped hole punch to add some designs to the paper. Add garlands to the tree for lighting, but be sure to use LED lights because incandescent lights can get hot, which is dangerous for paper decorations.
Make a tree from flowers or ferns
An arrangement of flowers or greenery can make a great tree in a pinch. The trick here is to get the right shape. Using a wide-mouthed container, start with the tallest stems in the center of the arrangement and work your way outward using shorter and shorter stems. To keep your stems organized and shaped like a tree, you can use styrofoam rings to hold the layers together. Start with the smallest ring on the longer center stems and work your way outward to the largest ring, covering the foam with greenery or decorations.
Use your out-of-season tomato cage
Gardeners will love that you can make a Christmas tree out of off-season tomato gardens. It’s good for the yard as well as inside. All you have to do is turn the round tomato cage upside down and bend the stakes together to make a point. You can use floral wire to hold them in place if they are hard to bend. Then hang some lights, garlands, or whatever decorations you like around the outside to make them yours.
