What’s New on Hulu in December 2022

Octavia Butler, venerable science fiction writer and futurist, died unexpectedly in 2006. It spared her how terrifyingly prescient her 1993 post-apocalyptic novel, The Parable of the Sower, was. But it also made it impossible for her to see her work, once relegated to the fringes of genre fiction, accepted by the wider critical community and adapted for television.

While the likes of Ava DuVernay and Nnedi Okorafor tried to bring Butler’s overtly sci-fi novels Breaking Dawn and The Wild Seed , respectively, to the screen, another adaptation made it to the finish line first. Kindred , based on the author’s complex and best-selling 1979 time travel book, hits Hulu on December 13. As you can see from the trailer, it looks like absolute fire:

The series, directed by Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, follows a young black woman named Dara (Mallory Johnson) who has just moved into a new home with her white husband Kevin (Micah Stock) when she begins to experience repetitive suffering. uncontrollable and inexplicable hallucinations – or more so – about the terrible events that befell her enslaved ancestors more than a hundred years ago. The narrative is a captivating thriller spanning centuries and a fearless exploration of the horrendous conditions in which countless black American slaves suffered and died, and the adaptation seems poised to bring it to the screen with powerful effect.
