Sorry, but Your Microwave Needs Service.

It’s easy to forget about our microwave when we’re not using it, especially since many models are compact, hidden in the corners of the counter or mounted above the stove. But like other kitchen appliances, our microwave ovens need basic maintenance to keep them running smoothly.

Here are some tips on how to keep your microwave oven running.

How to care for your microwave

According to most manufacturers , the service life of a microwave oven is approximately 10 years. Here’s how to ensure you get a full decade out of your device:

Cover your food

The best way to keep your microwave oven clean is to keep it clean. Do this by covering the food while cooking – just make sure the lid isn’t too tight (which can end up making an even bigger mess). Don’t know what to use? Read about the best way to cover food here .

Wipe up stains immediately

If food or liquid spills (it happens), wipe it up immediately. According to Consumer Reports , “Food leftovers can absorb energy from the microwave the next time it is turned on and create hot spots that can damage the inside.”

Clean accumulated dirt regularly

Even if you cover food and wipe up spilled liquid in a timely manner, a thin film may form inside the microwave oven. The longer it sits, the harder it is to remove, so when you spot it, get rid of it. Don’t know what to do? We’ve written about several ways to remove this film, including using steam , lemons , and baking soda.

Use an exhaust fan

If your microwave oven is located above the stove, you must turn on its extractor fan when using the hob, especially when steam is being used. You don’t want moisture to get into the electronic components of your microwave and shorten its life.

Clean grease filters

Clogged grease filters can make your microwave less efficient , causing it to work harder, which can shorten its lifespan. Read your microwave oven manual (if you still have one) for instructions on how to remove and safely clean grease filters.

If you can’t find one, the grease filters are usually located on the underside of the appliance and tend to slide out easily (although you can wear a pair of rubber gloves if you don’t like touching rough things). . Then fill a sink or basin with hot water, add a drop or two of degreasing liquid dish soap, and let the filters soak until the dirt can be easily wiped off. Finally, rinse them and then put them back in place.
