You Should Start Messaging Yourself on Whatsapp
The beauty of WhatsApp , along with other popular third-party chat apps, is that it allows you to send messages to anyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re reaching out to friends, family, or new acquaintances, or whether those people have an iPhone or an Android. If they have whatsapp they can chat. However, there is one person you haven’t messaged on WhatsApp and you probably should have: yourself .
If you’re using a platform like iMessage, the ability to send messages to yourself might not be new. But in WhatsApp, this is a completely new feature. In the past, the app didn’t offer a direct way to send a text to your number. However, one workaround was to start a group chat and then remove all other members, which would leave you alone with your own thoughts.
But why write to yourself at all? This is not a hack for those of us who have no one else to send messages to. Instead, text messages can be a useful replacement for a note-taking app: you can jot down ideas, interesting links you stumble upon, or any photos or videos you want to share. And since this is WhatsApp and not a random notes app, you can use this space to store content you want to share with other WhatsApp users in the future.
It’s also useful for sharing files between devices. Sharing files from Mac to Android or Windows to iPhone is notoriously annoying. Using a cross-platform app like WhatsApp can make this process much easier. I personally use this feature in Slack all the time to store notes and other work files that I want to share in the future, so I’m sure regular WhatsApp users can find similar benefits here.
How to write to yourself using whatsapp
To send text messages to yourself using WhatsApp , you need version 22.23.74 on iOS or version 2.22.23.77 on Android.
If this feature is enabled and working on your device, you should see it when you start a new chat. While the same list of contacts will appear, you should see your contact right at the top. Tap it and you’ll open a new chat with yourself, branded “Tell Yourself”. From here, write to yourself like anyone else, only the conversation will be one-sided. Like all other chats, these texts are encrypted with end-to-end encryption, so their use is completely safe and secure.
If you don’t see this feature right now, don’t worry, WhatsApp will be rolling it out to all users in the coming days. As long as your app is up to date, you should see it shortly.
