As we all know, freezing is a great way to reduce food waste. Storing food in the freezer stops the clock, so to speak, for at least a few months, which is better than the few days or weeks we usually get from storing fresh food in the refrigerator. But the water is tricky. It is the only (non-metallic) liquid that becomes less dense when it freezes. Its molecules rearrange to form a neat, ordered crystal structure, but this crystal takes up more space than liquid water.
