How to Stop Spattering Yogurt Once and for All
When I was a public school teacher in Brooklyn, I relied on yogurt to keep me going between classes. Yogurt cups are portable, easy and convenient to use when you barely have time for yourself. There is only one small problem: the yogurt burps.
Opening the foil lid will almost always cause the yogurt to eject, and if you’re not ready it can end up ruining your cold strings. This could spell disaster for a high school teacher (students will have comments), but equally so if you’re in a professional situation without a change of clothes. Fortunately, there is a quick and easy way to stop this fashion enemy once and for all: poke a small hole in the top.
Yogurt is packaged with an air pocket at the top of the container when the foil lid is sealed. Also, yogurt is advertised as containing live and active cultures, so a small amount of gas can put some pressure on your innocent snack. You think about that presentation 10 minutes later as you quickly gulp Dannon, but now that little pressure has now given you one more thing to take care of before the meeting (and you still haven’t eaten).
Instead of judging the yogurt or opening the container away from you and letting it spray onto something else (which you’ll have to clean anyway if you’re not a jerk), first poke a small hole in the top of the foil. . Use the tip of a spoon, fork, pen, thumbnail, whatever. It requires less force than you would put on a bubble tea lid or poke a straw through a juice box. This will allow the pressure to be released in a controlled manner without splashing. Open the liner as usual, satisfy your hunger and get on with your day.
