What Is Your Most Hated Purchase During the Pandemic?

There was one moment during quarantine in 2020 when I convinced myself that I was really going to take up painting. Two years later, I can’t bring myself to throw away the barely used brushes and canvases stuffed deep into my closet. We’ve all experimented with different coping mechanisms during the pandemic, leading to all sorts of out-of-character purchases that we now regret.

Lifehacker Senior Health Editor Beth Skwarecki shared with me her source of pandemic shopping regrets: roller skates. She says: “There was a hot minute when I thought I was going to take up roller dancing, so of course I needed all new skates in a different color and style.” And brushing off the dust that continues to gather on my roommate’s exercise bike, I feel safe in referring to her experience with a tinge of buyer remorse.

So now I ask you Lifehacker readers: what did you buy during the pandemic that you deeply regret now? Maybe you have a homemade kombucha starter kit in your pantry. Maybe you’re reading this from a house that seemed right to buy during the peak of the pandemic, but looking back, you were wrong. And who among us has not tried to grow his own vegetable garden? All I want to say is that I have too many glass jars and I don’t know what to do with them now.

Go ahead and look under your bed or in the back of your closet, then share your biggest source of pandemic-related buyer remorse with us in the comments below. I will then read your responses and compile them into a separate post next week. I hope we can all sympathize together and feel a little better about our shortsighted purchases. I know I’m not the only one who blames quarantine for a few hits on my wallet.
