How to Turn Off the Awesome New Twitter Update Sound
Change is scary and we don’t like it. Everything should stay as it is now, so we know how it works and how to use it. When a company like Twitter goes so far as to change the sound that plays when you refresh your feed, all hell breaks loose. I don’t overreact here. I know you feel the same. If you want to stop hearing those robotic tweets every time you look for new tweets, you can turn off the sound for good.
Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little . Personally, I don’t mind the new dual sound – a robotic chirp that plays when you drag down to refresh a page, and a second tone that plays when Twitter is done updating. However, it makes me miss the old sound, but unfortunately it’s not possible to bring it back.
Over the past few weeks, Twitter has been slowly rolling out this new sound to iOS and Android, according to The Verge . The Verge staff didn’t notice until July 14, but pointed to July 4 tweets questioning the updated Twitter. Presumably audio rolls out faster on iOS than on Android, but I have it on both platforms. However, I can only hear the second sound on my Pixel: so far, Twitter doesn’t make any sound when I first press down to refresh the feed.
How to turn off the new Twitter update sound
Turning off the sound is easy. Of course, it won’t play if your iPhone or Android device is in silent mode since all system sounds are muted when your phone is turned off or vibrates. On an iPhone, it’s as simple as toggling the volume switch to silent. On Android, press one of the volume buttons to open the volume controls, tap Ring, then tap Vibrate or Mute.
This method only works when your entire phone is disabled. If you like leaving the sound on but don’t want to hear the new Twitter tone, you can turn off the sounds for the Twitter app only. To get started, swipe right on the Twitter home screen to open the sidebar, then tap Settings & Privacy. Tap Accessibility, Display & Languages, then select Display & Sound (iOS) or Display (Android). Now turn off the toggle next to “Sound Effects” and you’ll never hear the new Twitter update sound again. Finally, you can safely scroll through the doom and only the sound of your alarming heartbeat echoes in your ears.
