How to Take a Giant Pill and Not Throw Up
It’s a bad sign if you refuse to take a multivitamin when someone else is in the kitchen. It doesn’t happen every time, but no one wants to risk someone witnessing vitamin-induced coffee regurgitation. And then trying to pop the pill again… it’s a terrible thing. But the fear of huge pills – whether your enemy is a prenatal vitamin or daily medicine – should no longer be part of your routine if you’re just taking a cue from your dog.
If it works for a Labrador, it’s good enough for me.
Dogs have sensitive noses and will turn their backs on most uncovered pills. The simple solution is to put a stinky pill in something that smells delicious, like peanut butter or meatballs, and they will eat it right away. And you know what? This method works well for humans as well.
I’m not suggesting you smear Centrum with peanut butter – it’ll make a mess, and peanut butter is hard to eat at the best of times – but it’s a good idea to put the pill in something tasty that won’t leave you indifferent. t require a lot of maneuvering to cover the additive. Your favorite food will help mask the taste and almost completely hide the fact that you are even swallowing a pill. Most multivitamins, along with some other supplements, are weirdly shaped monsters, even if they don’t taste terrible, so if you’re going to take them ( even if they probably won’t do anything for you ), you might as well make the experience more positive.
Cover the tablet with tasty but bland food.
The most important step to improve the experience of taking pills is to cover them not only with a tasty product, but also with the right texture for easy swallowing. We already know that fluids won’t help. Nothing dusty or dry is going to go away without a fight, and the same goes for anything you’ll be tempted to chew – the last thing you want to do is bite off a pill, so pick something you’d normally discard with ease. I like to disguise myself with a spoonful of fruit yogurt. The texture is thick but pliable, and the unpleasant taste of the pills is completely covered by the fruity-milky flavors. With one easy sip, I’m growing up.
Taking the pills with meals, literally, has the added benefit of helping to prevent indigestion. Not feeling sick is a big bonus if you’re used to having a mini pack of your daily medications. Other possible foods that will nicely mask the pills are mashed avocado, hummus, cottage cheese, French-style soft scrambled eggs , or mashed potatoes. Basically, everything you could eat if you didn’t have dentures.
A word of caution: I do not recommend using this method to surprise anyone, especially a child who is not taking pills. Never hide a vitamin in food. This can cause them to swallow the item, releasing all of the bad taste, or worse, present a choking hazard.
