13 Most Mysterious Exercise ‘Clues’ and What They Really Mean
Some things are hard to explain, and body movements are definitely on that list. When you lift a weight or take a yoga pose, each of the 600 muscles in your body plays a specific role. So trainers have come up with metaphors, feelings, and visual descriptions to help get the message across. Sometimes one of these signals just clicks for you, but sometimes you might be wondering what the hell that means.
We’re going to go through some of the more common signals you’ll hear, but first I’d like to make a disclaimer about what a “signal” actually is. These phrases are not a description of what an elevator should look like; they are designed to push in a certain direction. For example, if you lean forward too much while squatting, you may be told to “sit back.” One who is already properly balanced should not sit idly by; this will create a new problem.
This means that not every line you hear is really meant for you. The most common tips are designed to counter common mistakes, and that’s what you’ll hear in general tips or from YouTube instructors. You’ll still have to use your judgment to find out if the signal is helping you, or if you’re working with someone personally, ask for an opinion on whether you’re doing the right thing.
And, frankly, different coaches will argue about which lines are most appropriate and when. I’m not going to get involved in any of these disputes. Instead, here is my best description of what each of these weird signals should make you do.
