All the New Features That Your Old Apple Products Won’t Have

When it comes to software support, Apple is hard to beat. The company keeps updating older devices years after they were originally released, to the point where it’s a shame when your six-year-old iPhone 7 doesn’t run iOS 16 . A company may be generous with updates to its software, but that doesn’t mean it delivers all of its new features for all devices. If you’re using some older Apple hardware, you might be missing out on some of the best new features coming this fall.

iOS 16 and iPadOS 16

The good news is that everyone gets the ability to edit and undo posts. Ugh! However, there are many features that will not be available on the oldest Apple devices with iOS 16 and iPadOS 16. For example, if you have an iPhone 8 or iPad (7th generation), you are missing out on a lot of features. However, there are also a few features that Apple has omitted from the new devices, meaning you’ll need to have the best of the lot to take advantage of everything new here.

iPhone and iPad A12 Bionic and later

Think iPhone XS, XR and later, and iPad Air (3rd generation), iPad Mini (5th generation) and iPad (8th generation) and later.

  • Continuity Camera : This new feature allows you to use your iPhone as a Mac webcam and/or microphone. The process is completely wireless and requires no configuration. Alternatively, you can take advantage of the portrait mode (iPhone only).
  • Add medicines to the Health app using the camera . You can scan medicines with your iPhone’s camera to add them to the Health app with information such as medicine name, potency, and shape (iPhone only).
  • Live text in video : When you pause a video in iOS 16, any text in the frame becomes clickable. Live Text is already exclusive to A12 Bionic and newer.
  • Quick Actions with Live Text . Similarly, another new Live Text feature lets you interact with the data in a photo or video with a single tap.
  • Pick up an object from the background of a photo : Tap and hold on a photo object to separate it from the image. You can drag this new image to another source.
  • Insert emoji when sending text messages using Siri : You can now add emoji when composing text using Siri.
  • End a call with Siri : You can now say “Hey Siri, hang up” to end a phone call.
  • Ask Siri what you can do . Ask Siri what you can do in the app, and the assistant will tell you about your options, as well as the various Siri commands available.
  • Enhanced offline Siri support : More Siri requests will be processed on a device without an internet connection.
  • Updated Dictation : In iOS 16, Dictation doesn’t lock the keyboard, so you can quickly switch between voice typing and on-screen typing.
  • New Visual Look Up objects. Previously, Visual Look Up helped identify animals, plants, and landmarks. Now Apple has added birds, insects, and statues to the list.
  • Spotlight searches for images in more apps : Spotlight will now search for images in messages, notes, and files to help you find more specific requests.

iPhone 11, iPad A12 Bionic and later

These features do not work on the iPhone A12 Bionic, so the iPhone 11 is the latest Apple smartphone to be compatible with them. However, your iPad A12 Bionic will work here (with two exceptions).

  • Center Stage with Continuity Camera : While iPhones older than 11 can use the Continuity Camera, only 11 and newer can take advantage of the Center Stage thanks to the Ultra Wide Camera on these iPhones (iPhone only).
  • Continuous Camera Desktop View : With your iPhone’s ultra-wide-angle camera, you can show a bird’s eye view of your desk while showing your face at the same time (iPhone only).
  • Live Transcriptions : You can choose to display live subtitles on the screen during conversations, audio playback or video playback.
  • Live subtitles in FaceTime . Similarly, it is now possible to view live subtitles automatically transcribed during a FaceTime video call, with the speaker credited.

iPhone 12 and newer

There is one feature applicable to iPhone 12 and newer:

  • Continuous camera studio light: During video calls, studio light brightens your face and darkens the background.

iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro, iPad A12Z and later

The Apple iPhone 12 Pro and 13 Pro, and their Max variants, can use these two features, as can the iPad A12Z and later (i.e. iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation) and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation). generations) for this).

  • Loupe Detection Mode: When using the magnifier, you can see detailed descriptions of doors, people, and images.
  • Magnifying Glass Door Detection : Apple highlights door detection and how you’ll be able to find the door, read the signs and labels surrounding the door, and view instructions on how to open the door.

iPhone 13 and 13 Pro

Only the iPhone 13 line can use these two iOS 16 features:

  • Foreground Blurring in Portrait Mode : In addition to background blurring in Portrait Mode, you can now also blur foreground areas.
  • Improved the quality of cinematic mode . You will notice that the effect of depth of field in cinematic mode is more accurate in close-ups, and on the edges of hair and glasses.

iPad M1

Apple’s 11-inch iPad Pro, 12.9-inch iPad Pro, and iPad Air with M1 chip can use these two professional features:

  • Stage Manager : Apple is introducing a new Stage Manager feature from macOS Ventura to the iPad M1, bringing true windowed multitasking to the iPad for the first time.
  • Virtual Memory Replacement : Your iPad’s storage can be used to increase your total RAM while using resource-hungry apps, up to a total of 16GB (iPad Air M1 requires at least 256GB).

iPad Pro 12.9″ (M1)

If you own the premier and most expensive Apple tablet, only you can use this unique feature:

  • Reference Mode : You can use your iPad to provide a reference color for video production (if you have an Apple Silicon Mac).

macOS Ventura

Luckily for Mac owners, there aren’t too many restrictions here. If your Mac is compatible with macOS Ventura, you probably have access to almost every feature. However, there are a few that are only available on Apple silicon (M1 and newer):

  • Live Transcriptions : You can choose to display live subtitles on the screen during conversations, audio playback or video playback.
  • Live subtitles in FaceTime . Similarly, there is now the ability to view live subtitles automatically transcribed during a FaceTime video call, with the speaker’s attribution.
  • Insert emoji when sending text messages using Siri : You can now add emoji when composing text using Siri.
  • Reference Mode : You can connect your 12.9″ iPad Pro M1 to your Mac to get a reference color for video production.
