How to Tell If Your GE Refrigerator Has Just Been Recalled
When it comes to kitchen appliances, we usually don’t think about refrigerators as the biggest threat to our safety. (We’re looking at you, stove .) But recently, owners of six GE refrigerator models faced a different experience thanks to a faulty freezer handle that detaches when in use.
As you can imagine,Haier , the company that owns GE Appliances, has recalled these refrigerators, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) . Here’s what you need to know.
Why are GE refrigerators being recalled?
According to CPSC, various models of freestanding GE refrigerators with a French door are being recalled because their freezer handle could come loose when someone tries to open the freezer drawer, potentially causing them to fall. As of April 14, Haier has received 71 reports of a freezer drawer handle coming off, resulting in 37 reports of injuries, three of which were serious.
The recalled refrigerators were sold from February 2020 to January 2022 at retailers including The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy and other home and appliance stores across the country, as well as online at Lowes.com and BestBuy.com . Refrigerators cost between $1,900 and $2,500 depending on the model.
Which refrigerators are being recalled?
The recall includes approximately 155,000 GE refrigerators sold in the US and an additional 2,300 refrigerators sold in Canada.
All six recalled GE-brand French door refrigerator models have a bottom freezer, are made of fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, are 36 inches wide, and were produced from February 2020 to August 2021.

What to do if your GE refrigerator is recalled
If you have one of the GE refrigerators that is currently being recalled (or you are not sure if yours is on), you should contact GE Appliances at 1-888-345-4671 (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.). until 5:00 pm ET). or visit their recall website . In any case, be sure to have the model and serial number of your refrigerator handy.
GE is contacting all known buyers directly, but has not given a time frame, so it may be faster to contact them yourself. Once they confirm you have a refrigerator that is subject to a recall, GE will schedule a free house call to replace the freezer handle fasteners and reinstall the handle.
