How to Use SMS Automatically When RCS or IMessage Is Not Working

iMessage has revolutionized text messaging for iPhone users. He replaced SMS with a new, better and faster protocol. Now Android is trying to do the same with RCS. And while that’s going on, it has one problem: it doesn’t automatically fall back to SMS if the message doesn’t get through – instead, you’re asked to manually send it as an SMS. However, there is a feature in the settings that ensures that your message is automatically sent via SMS if RCS is down, and there is a similar feature for iPhone users.

How to enable SMS fallback for RCS in Google Messages

Google Messages is how RCS works on Android. It comes preinstalled on many popular smartphones and you can download it for free from the Play Store. Before you start using it regularly, it is best to enable the SMS fallback feature.

To do this, press the ” Menu ” button with three dots at the top left, go to ” Settings ” > ” Chat Features ” and turn on ” Automatically resend as text (SMS/MMS) “. In the pop-up window, click the ” Allow ” button.

Now, when the message does not pass through the RCS platform (which can happen for a variety of reasons), the recipient will still receive your message.

If this happens repeatedly and if the SMS backup function does not work, disable the RCS temporarily. Go to ” Settings ” > ” Chat Features ” and disable the ” Enable Chat Features” option.

How to enable SMS fallback for iMessage on iPhone

If you’re an iPhone user, it’s best to enable the SMS fallback option for iMessage, just to be on the safe side. You can do this from the Settings app. Here, open the ” Messages ” section and enable the ” Send as SMS ” option. The next time iMessage is unavailable, the Messages app will automatically send the message as an SMS.

If automatic fallback doesn’t work either, turn off iMessage completely for a while (if you’re traveling or in a patchy coverage area). Go to ” Settings ” > ” Messages ” and disable the ” iMessage ” feature from the top.
